Door openers for accessible entrances

Automatic doors for people with disabilities

A heavy door stops someone in a wheelchair, using a walker or with their arms full. We install an opener on your existing door when it's suitable, or put in a new automatic door, with push buttons placed where people can reach them.

Common situations

What usually gets in the way.

The door is too heavy

A stiff closer or the winter wind makes the door impossible to open for many customers.

The vestibule has two doors

Two doors close together have to open in sync, or the person gets stuck between them.

The button is in the wrong place

A button behind the door, mounted too high or in the door's swing path is no use to anyone.

Touching handles is a problem

In clinics, restaurants and public washrooms, touchless controls cut down on contact with surfaces.

What REFEXCO does

How we remove these obstacles.

Opener on a swing door

An operator added above the existing door. It's often a good fit for store entrances and interior doors.

Automatic sliding door

For high-traffic entrances, when the space in front of the door allows it.

Accessible push buttons

Buttons with a large accessibility symbol, on a post or on the wall, placed out of the door's path, outside and inside.

Touchless sensors

A wave-to-open sensor, or presence sensors for safety while the door opens and closes.

Codes and permits

Done by the rules.

  • The operator is chosen according to recognized standards for automatic doors (ANSI/BHMA A156.10 for full-power doors, A156.19 for low-energy doors).
  • An exit door or a fire door keeps its safety functions: we check what the Code de construction du Québec (Quebec Construction Code) requires before automating it.
  • REFEXCO (RBQ licence: 5683-0334-01) installs the door openers and coordinates the job. The electrical supply is handled by an electrical contractor who is a member of the CMEQ, and the plumbing by a contractor who is a member of the CMMTQ.
Possible grants

Programs that can cover part of the cost.

Status and conditions come from official sites. No amount is guaranteed: the program confirms eligibility.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How much does a handicap door opener cost?

The price depends on the type of door, the operator, the electrical supply to bring in, the buttons and the condition of the frame. REFEXCO gives a firm price after the site visit. Some grant programs may reimburse part of the cost: the grants tool shows you which ones to check.

Can an existing door be automated?

Often, yes. A door in good condition, hung properly in a solid frame, can take an opener. If the door or the frame isn't suitable, we recommend replacing them.

Where should the push button go?

Out of the door's swing path, at a height a wheelchair user can reach, on both sides of the door. We set its position on site, based on the route people actually take.

Does an automatic door need maintenance?

Yes. The sensors, the speed and force settings and the hardware should be inspected regularly. REFEXCO offers preventive maintenance and repairs.

Can your door be automated?

Send a photo of the door from both sides and of its frame. We'll tell you whether an opener will work or whether the door needs replacing.
