Accessible entrance

Wheelchair ramps and accessible entrances

A single step is enough to block an entrance. Depending on the height to clear and the space in front of the door, we build a ramp, lower a threshold or rebuild the entrance entirely, with excavation and concrete work when needed.

Common situations

What usually gets in the way.

One or two steps at the entrance

The most common case for street-front shops and raised bungalows.

Little room on the sidewalk

Sometimes the ramp needs more length than the space allows: another solution is required.

A threshold that's too high

A threshold of just a few inches can stop the small front wheels of a wheelchair.

Ice and snow

An outdoor ramp has to stay usable in winter: slope, surface and drainage all count.

What REFEXCO does

How we remove these obstacles.

Permanent ramp

Concrete, steel or aluminum depending on the building, with handrails and edge protection.

Reworked entrance

Lowering the landing, redoing the private walkway or moving the entrance when a ramp won't fit in the space.

Accessible thresholds

Low or bevelled thresholds, and a wider door if needed.

Handrails

On both sides, continuous and easy to grip.

Codes and permits

Done by the rules.

  • A ramp's slope, width, landings and handrails follow the barrier-free design section of the Code de construction du Québec (Quebec Construction Code) and the CSA B651 standard.
  • A ramp on public property or at the front of a building often needs a permit or approval from the municipality: we check before starting.
  • Excavation and concrete are done by REFEXCO Construction, on the same job site.
Possible grants

Programs that can cover part of the cost.

Status and conditions come from official sites. No amount is guaranteed: the program confirms eligibility.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How do I make my business entrance accessible?

We measure the height to clear, the space in front of the door and the width of the passage. Depending on the case: a ramp, a lowered threshold or a reworked entrance, then an automatic door if the door is heavy.

How long does a wheelchair ramp need to be?

It depends on the height to clear and the maximum slope the code allows for your type of building. We calculate the length on site and check that it fits in the space available.

Do I need a permit for an outdoor ramp?

Often, yes, especially at the front of the building or near the sidewalk. The rules vary from one municipality to the next; we check them before quoting.

How many steps at your entrance?

One photo from the front and one from the side, with the approximate height, are enough for a first opinion.
